The Health Commission of the Congress has approved this Thursday unanimously to urge the Government to review in the public calls destined to finance the research and clinical trials the selection criteria so that the solvent projects in childhood cancer are adequately financed .

The initiative, a transaction agreed between PP, PSOE and Citizens, also requests to evaluate and promote diagnostic techniques and oncological treatments for children with more specific and potentially less toxic biological agents, respecting, in any case, the legal authorizations of the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products.

They have also called for increasing the creation of specialized centers and specialized pediatric cancer units for different types of childhood cancer, centralizing efforts and guaranteeing adequate care for patients, within the framework of the procedure for the designation of the referral center.

The agreed text also calls for all children’s oncology units to have a follow-up unit that works in coordination with the family doctor in the early follow-up and identification and treatment of medical problems associated with the treatment received.

Cancer is the leading cause of infant mortality in the West

It also proposes to improve the system of referral of patients between autonomous communities and to agree with them the possibility of including the different variants of childhood cancer in a disaggregated manner in the cancer population registries to facilitate the transmission of data.

In the defense of the proposal not of initial law, the socialist deputy Aurora Flórez has indicated that cancer is the leading cause of infant mortality in the West and has stressed that it is a radically different phenomenon than adults. “It’s random and unpredictable.”

Within the brain tumors, the parliamentarian has referred to the intrinsic diffuse trunk glioma (DIPG), which most frequently occurs in the brainstem. Twenty to thirty cases are diagnosed per year of DIGP in our country and only 30% of affected will reach the first year of life after diagnosis , while only 10% will reach the second year.

Both for these patients and for children with cancer in general, the increase in research is their greatest hope, said Flórez, who has lamented the little commercial interest that exists in drugs aimed at fighting childhood cancer , due to its low incidence in the population, which hinders both public and private research.

In the defense of an amendment of the PP, Eduardo Fernandez has narrated how he felt the day he was told that his son, a few months old, had a tumor. “Nobody is prepared for that.”

“And in the midst of that nonsense, try to smile, to play, to keep everything in a normal situation, that nobody has had to tell me, fortunately what they did not have to tell me is that my son did not has gone, “he said.

The popular deputy has appealed to the obligation of parliamentarians to overcome emotionalism and to “remove obstacles” to reach an agreement.
